Netflix launched its redesigned homepage on its TV app to a small subset of users after 10 years of using the same layout.
The preview shows that the redesigned layout added featured space for live sports and video games to support the streaming giant's current investments.
Netflix Debuts Redesigned TV App
The TV app will start to look different to some selected users. For instance, the new layout moved the menu to the upper corner and made it horizontal. This includes tabs like "Home," "Shows," "Movies," and "My Netflix."
If a viewer hovers over an individual tile, it will automatically play a clip of the show along with a text synopsis of the show, total running time, and more. Netflix will still utilize its algorithm to suggest similar content to the front of the Home tab.
According to Netflix, they found that users were often scanning too much through their eyes to find the show they were looking for. Pat Flemming, senior director of product experience, shared that the redesigned app aims to make navigation easier and cleaner for the audience.
Netflix Plans Simplified Experience
The testing for the redesigned app will check if the new layout will prove to be more effective for users. "We really wanted members to have an easier time figuring out if a title is right for them," Flemming added.
In addition, the layout allows users to go back to the menu by simply pressing the back button. Gone are the days of scrolling back to the top to get back to where you were. The "Categories" tab was removed from the menu selection but the audience can still access it through the search tab.
Aside from simplifying the experience, Netflix is also making room for its recent ventures. Live sports events like Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson are also pushed forward. Later this year, subscribers will get access to NFL games and WWE Monday Night Raw.
Netflix teased that the update would be released to more members if the initial testing goes well.
