When the first episode of "House of the Dragon" aired, everyone who had already seen "Game of Thrones" beforehand probably let out a little squeal as both had the same intro. The only difference was the former had stone structures instead of buildings in Westeros. Well, that's all about to change.
New 'House of the Dragon' Intro for Season 2
"Game of Thrones" has the kind of intro that people do not skip. Aside from the recognizable theme song by Ramin Djawadi, the mechanical-like formation of the notable locations tells the story of Westeros and its current state.
The Targaryen-centric show adopted the same graphic intro, only it added the flow of blood alluding to the bloodline of the dragon-riding house. While iconic and familiar, the showrunners have decided to create a new intro for "House of the Dragon."
Not to worry. It won't be too different. The music will remain, as it should, but the graphics will no longer show blood flowing through symbols of the family members. Instead, it will be a tapestry unfurling as it shows the names of the cast and blood drenches it.
Those who have been paying attention might notice that the symbols begin with Viserys as the blood trickles down to his child, Rhaenyra, and then onto Alicent and the next generation with Viserys' children.
Showrunner Ryan Condal explained that while they think the intro in season one works well, as it was visually dynamic and interesting, it depicted a family tree and was about the "bloodlines of this generational family," as mentioned in Gizmodo.
With the new season, the second generation has begun as King Aegon II sits on the throne. Characters like Aemond Targaryen, Jacaerys Velaryon, and other important members of the family tree are now acknowledged in the opening credits as well.
"Game of Thrones loves an evolving title sequence, and we just didn't really know where to go with it from there," Condal continued. With the first season being about ancestry and bloodlines, the second season is now about a living history.
Intending to create something dynamic that would communicate the themes of the story for season two, the show hired a title company called yU+co to design the mentioned tapestry. It begins with Old Valyria, which will only evolve from there.
The Second Season's Close Release Date
We are now less than two weeks away from the release of the second season. It's so close that watching one episode from season one per day would land you exactly on the release of season two, so now is the best time for a refresher.
Set to be aired on June 16th at 9 p.m. ET, the first episode will be titled "A Son for a Son," which refers to the death of the young prince Lucerys Velaryon. As reported by Tom's Guide, they will continue to be released on a weekly basis and will end with episode eight on August 4th.
