Microsoft may have more surprises scheduled for its event next week, as a Surface Pro 3 tablet may be in the cards.
When Microsoft started to send out invitations to its event on May 20, the first thought in everyone's mind was that the company is finally ready to launch a Surface Mini tablet. While the Surface Mini is still expected to debut at the event, it may be sharing the stage with a new-generation Surface Pro tablet.
As one Twitter user pointed out in a post on May 14 (spotted by The Verge), Microsoft has launched a new Support page on its website that clearly mentions the "Surface Pro 3 camera." The page in question details how to add recording support for H.264 with the Surface Pro 3.
While it's possible that the page actually referred to the Surface Pro 2 camera and the Surface Pro 3 appeared as a typo, there's also a good chance that Microsoft is getting ready to unleash a new flagship tablet.
Just last week, CNET reported having learned from sources that Microsoft is planning to launch a new tablet that would pack an Intel Haswell chipset under the hood. The news remained unconfirmed, but this new Surface Pro 3 mention on Microsoft's support page suggests that the company may indeed launch a new Surface Pro tablet alongside the smaller Surface Mini.
Microsoft made its first foray into the tablet market back in 2012, when it launched its own-brand slates with the Surface RT and the Surface Pro. Those tablets did not see much success, especially not the RT model, but Microsoft didn't give up and launched a second generation in 2013 with its new Surface 2 (running Windows RT) and Surface Pro 2 (running the full-fledged version of Windows).
The company now seems keen on boosting its presence on the tablet market with a new Surface Mini and Surface Pro 3. The former may find an audience on the small-size tablet market, while the latter should boast notable improvements over its predecessor (pictured above) and launch as a powerful business tablet.
Microsoft has yet to confirm plans to launch a Surface Mini or a third-generation Surface Pro, so take everything with a grain of salt for now. With its May 20 event just one week away, however, we'll soon know all there is to know straight from the source. Stay tuned for more details as soon as they become available.
