"House of the Dragon" is arguably one of the most popular series right now, and people all over social media are even declaring which side they are on in the civil war. HBO recognizes this early on and renews the show for a third season
'House of the Dragon' is Getting a New Season
The first episode of the second season is not even out yet and fans are already treated with news that they can expect another season from the show. HBO confirmed the renewal through a press release, and they did so three days before the premiere of season 2.
There's not much to know about the third season seeing as it has only been announced. Since it's based on George R.R. Martin's "Fire & Blood" novel, we will know how season 3 begins depending on how the second season leaves the story.
As mentioned in Engadget, Martin, showrunner Ryan Condal, and the rest of the executive producers, cast and crew "have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon," HBO Executive Vice President Francesca Orsi said.
There's even a possibility that the show goes beyond a third season. Orsi mentioned that it may have more than four seasons as Martin and Condal discussed where to end the show before the Writer's Strike in 2023.
For now, fans are preparing for the premiere of the second season after all the conflict season 1 ended with. It showed Team Black and Team Green on the verge of war, and Rhaenyra having lost her son after sending him as a messenger to House Baratheon.
With Rhaenyra initially aiming for a peaceful succession as she attempts to dethrone Aegon II without bloodshed, fans already know that's out of the question. Based on the trailers released by HBO, there will be a lot of deaths and sacrifices in the looming civil war.
The network will be releasing one episode every week, with the first one coming out this June 16th at 9 p.m. ET. With eight episodes in line, the season will end by August 4th. The rest of the episodes still have no official titles apart from the first, which is titled "A Son for a Son."
What to Expect for Season 2
Now that Aegon II Targaryen has ascended the throne in front of the masses, it will be difficult for Rhaenyra to take the throne from him, but if the show stays true to the books, we know that she will eventually achieve what she set out to do.
However, fans also know that HBO does take a few creative liberties and deviate from the source material, so really, we won't completely know what to expect. The actor portraying Aegon II, Tom Glynn-Carney, revealed a few things that allude to that.
In an interview with Esquire, he mentioned that there are some differences between the show and the book it was based on. "The books are the foundation of where we're going narratively, but things are tweaked."
