LG G3 sensor seen next to rear camera disclosed – Hint: Laser

The highly-anticipated LG G3 keeps leaking ahead of its big debut on May 27 and now more information is available regarding the sensor next to the rear camera.

The LG G3 is expected to make its official debut later this month, boasting top-tier specs and features and a whopping QHD display with an incredible resolution. Leaks are starting to pile up and more info is surfacing on a daily basis, and now the rear sensor spotted next to the camera is getting some attention.

Well-known and trusted tipster @evleaks has posted press renders of the purported LG G3 in three color options - black, silver, and gold - on Thursday, May 15. In addition to these images, the tipster also revealed what the sensor near the rear camera actually is.

When press renders of the purported LG G3 first surfaced, people started to speculate that the sensor on the rear of the device may be an IR blaster. According to @evleaks, however, that's not the case. The tipster claims that the sensor in question is in fact a "laser auto focus," whatever that means.

It remains unclear at this point just what a laser auto focus would entail, but previous rumors indicated that this sensor could help improve the quality of photos in low-light conditions.

The LG G3 will launch as the company's flagship smartphone for 2014, and it will pack some impressive specifications to make it worthy of the title. Based on rumors and leaks so far, LG's new smartphone powerhouse will boast a 5.5-inch display with a QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, a blazing-fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor, and a hefty 3GB of RAM for a fluid and responsive performance.

Other rumored specs include 32GB of internal storage capacity, a microSD card slot for additional memory, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a large 3,000 mAh battery. On the software side, the LG G3 will surely launch with the latest Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system.

As previously mentioned, the LG G3 is expected to make its official debut on May 27, so we'll know all the official details soon enough. Until then, take all leaks, rumors, and speculation with a grain of salt.
