New Research Confirms AI's Accuracy in Early Cancer Detection

A recent study revealed that AI models can help increase the early detection of cancer by identifying specific tissue samples, resulting in earlier treatment for patients.

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the Imperial College of London focused on detecting and classifying cancer based on DNA methylation signatures.

Research Detects 13 Deadly Cancers Using AI Model

The researchers had an intensive task to distinguish the noncancerous and cancerous tissue at a certain speed. Using machine learning, they were able to identify cancer-specific changes in tissues based on their DNA methylation.

The majority of cancer patients detected their illness when it was already in the advanced stages. This scenario often makes it harder for doctors to treat due to its fast movement to other tissues.

According to the study, most cancers are treatable and curable if they are detected during their early stage. Hence, having a tool that could detect and classify cancer at a different pace could change the trajectory of the illness.

AI Continues Contribution to the Medical Field

The researchers observed significant changes in the DNA marks in early cancer development. The AI model used managed to identify 13 different cancer types from non-cancerous tissue. It also reported a 98.2% accuracy rate.

AI has been increasingly helpful to the medical field. Several health institutions are gradually adopting AI to their system to aid them in various tasks from surgery to admin duties.

The researchers of this study emphasized the model used must undergo further training and testing. The research could be used as a first step in integrating AI models to boost insights and understanding of cancer.

Cancer remains as one of the leading causes of death. Around 19 million cases are reported every year with 10 million deaths.
