The Watch Dogs Live-Action Movie Adaptation is Finally in Production

If you think the Borderlands movie took a while before it finally reached completion, fans of Watch Dogs have been waiting longer and may have to be a little more patient to finally see the outcome. After over a decade, the film adaptation of the hacker-centric game is finally in production.

'Watch Dogs' Movie Already in the Works

To put into perspective just how long this movie has been on the back burner, the adaptation was first announced in 2013 and it only took a year after that for the game to come out. That means that Ubisoft is finally making major progress after 11 years.

Since the game has been released long before, we already have an idea about what the movie might be like. In Watch Dogs, a hacker based in Chicago uses his skills to hack the city's infrastructures, cameras, and other technologies and go against corrupt companies and crime bosses.

The plot of the movie is still unclear, so it's unknown whether we'll be seeing the first game's protagonist, Aiden Pierce, in action, as per Kotaku. Still, we already have announced cast members that can help paint the picture of what we can expect.

Ubisoft recently shared a photo on X of a clapper board with the title "Watch Dogs" on it. Some users were excited about the announcement while others were skeptical. It's understandable since the game-to-film adaptation culture hasn't always been successful.

As for the casting, the only confirmed actors who will play unspecified roles in the film are Tom Blyth, who played the young Coriolanus Snow in "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," and Sophia Wilde, who starred in the horror film "Talk to Me."

The original plan called for a partnership with Sony, but that has since changed and the production company involved will now be Regency Pictures. There's still the matter of waiting for the production to wrap up, and that may take a year or two as well.

Let's hope it fares better than Ubisoft's adaptation of a more popular franchise, Assassin's Creed. The film adaptation starred Michael Fassbender, had a decent story, and great CGI, but fans of the game series were still left unimpressed.

Will There Be a Watch Dogs 4?

The film adaptation might be the last thing we'll see of the IP apart from the hacking collective DedSec being a faction in the first-person shooter XDefiant. Rumor has it that Ubisoft is already sunsetting the franchise, and there are several potential reasons behind it.

One is the poor reception of the latest game in the series, Watch Dogs Legion, wherein the player can control more than one character will various abilities to complete missions. Even the second game could not match the popularity of the first title released in 2014, as per Game Rant

Several projects involving the franchise were already canceled, and the senior staff members working on the project have either been relocated or have departed from the company, so there's little hope that there will be a new title for the hacker game.
