Apple Requires Button Changes Amid Epic's EU App Review Process

Apple approved the Epic Games Store for iOS in the European Union (EU) but required the company to fix the app's button for future submission for revision.

Epic considered the approval as "temporary" and said that it would fight the demand from Apple for the next version of the app.

Apple Approves Epic Games Store App With Conditions

After months of back and forth between the two companies, Apple has finally approved Epic's app to proceed with its EU app. Previously, the app was rejected twice by the tech giant - a decision that was faced with scrutiny.

Apple stated that while Epic complies with the majority of EU's app guidelines, the download button and related copy are allegedly against the rules. The tech giant argued that it could confuse consumers that the elements are Apple-made items.

Last week, Apple made a last-minute decision to reconsider Epic's submission. The company asked Epic to revise the buttons for the future submission of the app for review.

Epic Vows to Fight App Changes Amid Initial Approval

In an X post, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney expressed that the condition for the app is "absurd." He also explained that changing the buttons for the next app version would make the store "less standard and harder to use."

Epic submitted the application for its Games Store app along with Fortnite to Apple's iOS notarization process. The initial approval of the app moved Epic closer to its goal of launching its iOS marketplace in the EU under the Digital Markets Act.

"Apple has told some press channels that, though they have approved our current EGS iOS App for notarization, they are still demanding Epic change the user interface in a future version. Epic is disputing this," Epic shared with Apple Insider.
