As the smartwatch race is heating up, HTC is among the latest companies rumored to join the wearable device market with a smartwatch of its own.
The Motorola Moto 360 currently stands out of the crowd by sporting a round form factor, as opposed to competing devices from Samsung, Sony, LG, and others. According to a new leak, however, HTC may be challenging the Moto 360 with its own circular-shaped smartwatch soon.
When Motorola first announced its Moto 360 earlier this year, it unveiled it as one of the first two wearables to run Google's Android Wear OS, alongside the LG G Watch. At the time, HTC did not make any announcements regarding plans to join the wearable device market, but the company may have some news soon.
If a new report is to be believed, HTC may be getting ready to showcase its own smartwatch sometime soon. The news comes from TK Tech News, which claims to have learned from one of its sources that HTC's upcoming smartwatch may launch soon as the One Wear. This name may not be definitive yet, but it would make sense for HTC to include the "One" moniker in the name of its upcoming smartwatch.
If accurate, the "One Wear" name suggests two things: that it will run Google's recently-launched Android Wear platform, and that it will be compatible with HTC's popular One family of devices (or at least some of them).
In terms of design, the report mentions that the HTC One Wear would sport a circular form factor and will come in polycarbonate (plastic) and metal bodies. The gadget is expected to make its debut in August or September this year.
No other details are currently available regarding this HTC smartwatch, but more information should become available shortly. The wearable device market it gaining momentum and more big players are expected to join the party this year. Apple is expected to launch its iWatch later this summer, Microsoft is rumored to launch a platform-neutral smartwatch, Samsung will reportedly release more Gear variants, and Google should also launch a wearable gadget of its own. With such big players joining the fray, smartwatches and other smart wearable devices are shaping up to be a must-have this year.
