Samsung Galaxy S5 Active hits AT&T: What’s new with this model? (VIDEO)

The much-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is finally official and AT&T has already started selling the device online and in its stores.

When Samsung officially launched its latest Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone, many wondered whether a more rugged version would still be relevant. Last year, the Galaxy S4 Active offered water- and dust-resistance whereas the original Galaxy S4 did not, but this year the Galaxy S5 already launched with IP67 certification to make it more durable.

Nonetheless, rumors about a Galaxy S5 Active persisted and the smartphone is now official, offering some extra oomph in terms of ruggedness.

"As summer begins to hit its stride, you need a phone that can handle the elements. Engineered to keep up with your active lifestyle, AT&T and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announce the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, the next step of the popular Galaxy S5 designed to withstand the bumps and bruises of everyday life," AT&T announced in a new press release on Friday, May 30.

AT&T is now selling the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active for $199 on a two-year contract, $27.50 per month with AT&T Next 18, or $35.75 per month on AT&T Next 12. Moreover, the carrier aims to further sweeten the deal for those looking to purchase a Samsung Gear Fit as well, slashing $50 off the price of the fitness-focused gadget when purchasing a Galaxy S5 Active.

As previously mentioned, the original Galaxy S5 already comes with IP67 rating for dust- and water-resistance, but the Active model adds more ruggedness with the MIL-STA 810G rating, the latest version of the military standard for shock-resistant equipment. This means that the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is even more tolerant to vibration, temperature, rain, humidity, and altitude compared to its standard counterpart.

Moreover, since the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is targeted at active individuals, it also sports a one-touch button designed to launch the phone's outdoor activity apps in an easy and seamless manner.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active houses the same powerful internals as the original flagship, i.e. a 5.1-inch full HD 1080p display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, a 16-megapixel rear camera, LTE support, and a heart-rate sensor. On the software side, the smartphone runs the latest Android 4.4 KitKat.
