Surface Pro 3, look out! HP Pro x2 612 challenger is coming

HP has unveiled a brand new 2-in-1 PC at Computex 2013, the Pro x2 612, which will give Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 a run for its money.

The new HP Pro x2 612 will launch in September, sporting a detachable design that will allow users to enjoy it either as a tablet, or as a laptop when docked with a keyboard.

HP touts its new Pro x2 612 as a business-ready 2-in-1 PC, and has packed various features to support this claim, including Client Security, Sure Start, TMP, Smart Card Reader, and others. The device also comes with an optional fingerprint reader for those who want some extra security.

"While the use of technology in business has allowed a blurring of the line that separates work and life, many businesses require updated technology that delivers a secure and satisfying experience to its employees," said Enrique Lores, senior vice president and general manager or Commercial PCs at HP. "HP continues to innovate secure business devices that allow employees to be productive and stylish wherever work - or life - takes them."

The new HP Pro x2 612 is the company's first detachable PC. The tablet portion sports a 12.5-inch IPS display with a choice of HD or Full HD resolution, as well as different choices for processors, starting from the latest Pentium series all the way to the Intel Core i5. A model even packs vPro on board, and high-end configurations will boast HD 4200 graphics.

Connecting the tablet to the keyboard dock will provide a full laptop experience, complete with several connectivity options such as VGA output, DisplayPort, an RJ-45 socket, dual USB 3.0 ports, as well as an extra battery. The tablet alone provides roughly 8 hours and 15 minutes of use, but goes up to 14 hours and 15 minutes with the keyboard dock.

The ultra mobile backlit keyboard dock, meanwhile, will provide basic features such as a USB 3.0 port, a power connector, and audio out.

Other specs of the new HP Pro x2 612 2-in-1 PC include an optional Qualcomm Gobi 4G LTE modem, dual high-definition cameras, and a battery-free Wacom pen.

"Regardless of the chosen configuration, the HP Pro x2 612 is packed with business-ready features to keep users connected and productive wherever work takes them," HP further touts.

The HP Pro x2 612 will run Windows 8.1 and will become available in September, but the company has yet to announce pricing details for the device.
