Roku Backdrops Lets You Turn Your Smart TVs into Picture Frames

Mounted setups of smart TVs take up a significant portion of walls in homes that have them, and now Roku has found a way to make its smart TVs be more than just a TV.

Its new 'Backdrops' feature will now make sure that smart TVs are now not just an entertainment hub, but also devices that display pictures. Instead of random screensavers usually displayed by TVs on stand-by, Roku will allow users to set their favorite images to be shown on full screen.

Roku first announced its Backdrops feature earlier this year, promoting the use of its devices for showcasing art and other still images that will maximize its display. In its latest update, Roku has announced that this feature will be available to users for free, and it will start rolling out on first-party Roku TVs in the coming weeks.

First-party Roku TVs are smart TVs made by the company, this new Backdrops feature will be available to eligible devices soon. Essentially, the Backdrops feature can turn a Roku TV into a picture frame. Aside from photos that they took, users can also use the feature to show works of art that they want to showcase in their homes.

Roku's New Feature is Similar to Samsung's Frame TV

Roku's Backdrops will also be available on third-party TV sets powered by Roku OS. The company has also revealed that this new feature will be coming to other Roku streaming devices later this fall.

If this feature sounds all too familiar, this is because it is similar to Samsung's The Frame TV, a smart television released in 2022 that features bezels replicating a feature frame. This can likewise display selected photos as if it is printed on the device.

Smart TV Developments Add Tech to Homes

The evolution of smart TVs has been one of the most iconic developments in the tech industry, particularly as it has been become must-haves for one's home. The arrival of the streaming era has even helped boost its popularity in recent years.

Among the most famous smart TV manufacturers in the world is South Korea's Samsung, and in 2022, it updated its Frame TV to bring 4K resolution and bezels that replicate a photo frame.

On the other hand, other brands that are trusted in the industry, include LG, TCL, Sony, Philips, Roku, and more. While Roku, in particular, started with streaming sticks, which became popular thanks to Google's Chromecast, the company has since evolved to offering its self-made smart TVs which offer its Roku OS.

Smart TVs are called "smart" for significant reasons, and this is because users can do a lot with these devices apart from connecting to cables or entertainment devices for one's needs. Roku expands on its capabilities even more with its new Backdrop feature.
