Microsoft has just launched a new Nokia X2 Android-powered smartphone, which comes as a dual-SIM entry-level handset with an affordable price tag.
Of you were hoping to see a high-end Android smartphone from Nokia, you're out of luck. The new Nokia X2 still targets budget shoppers and it doesn't have any high-end specs, but it does seem like the smartphone Nokia should have launched in the first place.
The original Nokia X and XL just made their debut a few months ago, but Microsoft apparently doesn't want to waste any time. The company is banking on the Nokia acquisition it made not too long ago and has now released this new smartphone, which comes as a slight upgrade over its predecessor.
In terms of design, the new Nokia X2 comes in a colorful array of options reminiscent of the Lumia lineup, but this time everything's shinier thanks to a translucent outer layer that makes it glossier.
"Striking to look at and beautiful to hold, the Nokia X2 Dual SIM seemingly glows from within with its innovative dual layered finish. Available in a range of vibrant colours and strutting a gorgeous 4.3" ClearBlack WVGA display, it's a model in its own right," touts the product page.
When it comes to specifications, the new Nokia X2 smartphone comes with a 4.3-inch display and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. By comparison, the Nokia X had a slower processor clocked at 1GHz. The new model is still no powerhouse, but it does sport some notable improvements. Other specs include a 5-megapixel rear camera with flash and auto focus, as well as a front shooter "that's perfect for Skype calls."
The Nokia X2 also comes with pre-loaded Microsoft software such as Skype, Outlook, OneDrive, and a user interface that's more in line with Windows Phone.
"In terms of Microsoft-made apps, Skype, Outlook.com and OneDrive with 15GB storage are available right out of the box. Bing Search app, Yammer and Xbox games, including SnapAttack, Wordament and Kinectimals are available from the Nokia Store. The note-taking app, OneNote also makes its debut, giving people another useful way to experience cloud services," reads the press release on Tuesday, June 24.
"For the socialites amongst you, LINE, WeChat, Path, Facebook and Facebook Messenger are also available."
The Nokia X2 costs €99 (roughly $135) and is available immediately in "select countries," but the company has yet to detail exactly which countries we're talking about. According to BGR, the smartphone will make a wider debut globally next month. In the meantime, check out the hands-on demo video below to learn more about it.
