iPhone 6 to launch on Sept. 25, 5.5-inch model to debut as ‘iPhone Air’

Apple will reportedly unveil its new iPhone 6 on Sept. 15 and launch it on Sept. 25, according to the Chinese media.

The iPhone 6 is widely expected to arrive in September, but these newly-alleged dates are a bit intriguing. Sept. 15, i.e. the alleged date of the announcement, falls on a Monday, while the purported Sept. 25 commercial launch falls on a Thursday. Apple typically releases new devices on a Friday, so it can give prospective buyers a full weekend to get accustomed to the latest gadget.

In a new report (translated) citing "inside sources," the Chinese media (via GforGames) further reveals that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will make its debut as the "iPhone Air." The publication also notes that the 16GB version will sell in China for 5,998 yuan (about $965). The 4.7-inch model, meanwhile, will reportedly cost 5,288 (roughly $850) for the 32GB variant, which is the current price point for the 16GB iPhone 5S in the country.

As previously mentioned, these alleged dates contradict Apple's traditional strategy of launching new products on a Friday, as well as recent reports suggesting that the iPhone 6 will debut on Friday, Sept. 19. Nothing is confirmed at this point, but a Thursday launch does seem unlikely.

When it comes to an apparent lack of a 16GB model for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, this is not the first time such claims surface. Just recently, Chinese web portal Tencent revealed that the iPhone 6 would launch on Sept. 19 in 32GB and 64GB storage options, without any mention of a 16GB model.

The "iPhone Air" moniker is not a big surprise either, as previous reports have claimed that suppliers were using this name when referring to the 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

It still remains unclear at this point whether Apple would launch both iPhone 6 models at the same time. Some reports claimed that the 4.7-inch model would debut first and the 5.5-inch version would follow by the end of the tear, but subsequent reports said that Apple had overcome some issues rumored to cause delays with the 5.5-inch model and both versions would launch simultaneously.

Aside from the larger display size, the iPhone 6 is further expected to boast a thinner profile, a faster Apple A8 processor, a better camera, enhanced 4G LTE, wireless charging, NFC, and some other neat features.

It all remains in the rumor state for now, however, so take everything with a grain of salt. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we hear more about the highly-anticipated iPhone 6, so stay tuned.
