The much-rumored Microsoft Surface Mini tablet may finally make its debut this summer, if a new leak proves to be accurate.
Microsoft was widely expected to unveil a Surface Mini alongside the Surface Pro 3 slate, but so far the smaller tablet has yet to materialize. The company launched its Surface Pro 3 at its BUILD 2014 developer conference last month, making no mention of a smaller Surface tablet.
Subsequent reports claimed that Microsoft had indeed planned to launch the Surface Mini alongside the Surface Pro 3 at BUILD, but ultimately changed its mind fearing that the smaller slate does not have what it takes to challenge rivals in its category. It remained unclear at the time whether Microsoft's decision to launch the Surface Pro 3 alone meant that the Surface Mini was dead for good, or just that it needed further improvements before launch.
Microsoft itself confirmed the existence of the Surface Mini, albeit in an indirect manner. Just last month the company posted the user guide for the Surface Pro 3, and the material in question contained multiple references to the Surface Mini.
Famous tipster @evleaks now claims that Microsoft is back on track with the Surface Mini, looking to unleash the smaller tablet sometime this summer.
"Microsoft Surface Mini is back in production, in anticipation of a summer release," @evleaks reveals in a new post on Monday, July 7.
The tipster offered no other details regarding the purported tablet's specs or exact launch, so it's all hazy at this point. If Microsoft did indeed halt the tablet's launch last month because it felt it wasn't good enough, but now it's ready to start mass production, it could mean that the Surface Mini will come with some impressive specs and features on board.
Notable rivals include Apple's iPad Mini, Google's Nexus 7, as well as a slew of other good tablets in this category, so the Microsoft Surface Mini will definitely face some stiff competition when or if it makes it to the market.
It's all in the rumor state for now, however, so take this new leak with a grain of salt. Evleaks may have an excellent track record in providing accurate information, but that's no guarantee that this news is accurate as well. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more details become available regarding the Surface Mini's specs, pricing, and launch, so stay tuned.
