Sony Xperia Z1 Compact finally launches in the U.S., sports $549.99 price tag unlocked

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is finally available in the U.S., as the company is now selling the unlocked device directly through its online store.

Sony unveiled its Xperia Z1 Compact back at the CES 2014 trade show early this year, and the handset has already been available in Europe for quite some time. Interested customers who have been eagerly waiting for the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact to make its way to the U.S. are now in for some good news, as the smartphone is finally available for purchase.

Unlike other smaller versions of flagship smartphones out there, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact comes with uncompromising specs despite its compact form factor, raising the bar for what "Mini" smartphones can offer.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact sports a 4.3-inch HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor under the hood, clocked at 2.2GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM for a fast and fluid performance. Other specs include 16GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory of up to 64GB, Sony's flagship mobile sensor with a high-end 20.7-megapixel Sony Exmor RS rear camera, and a 2-megapixel front shooter.

The smartphone has a 2,300 mAh battery, 4G LTE support, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth, is dust-resistant and waterproof, and comes with the new Android 4.4 KitKat OS on board. The company calls it "the best of Sony in a compact waterproof smartphone," and the Xperia Z1 Compact clearly seems worthy of the title.

Sony has launched its latest Xperia Z2 smartphone in the meantime, but no Xperia Z2 Compact. Rumor has it that the company may skip straight to the Xperia Z3 Compact, but nothing is confirmed at this point. For the time being, the Xperia Z1 Compact is the only "Mini" smartphone in the company's lineup.

Those interested in purchasing the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact in the U.S. can now get the SIM-free, unlocked smartphone for $549.99 directly from Sony's online store at this link. The handset appears as in stock and ready to ship, and available color options include black, white, and pink.
