Xperia T2 Ultra gets Android 4.4 KitKat & more with Sony software upgrade

Sony has just announced that it released the Android 4.4 software update for its Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T2 Ultra Dual smartphones.

As expected, Android 4.4 KitKat brings a number of new features and improvements to the table, and the two devices will also get a range of neat enhancements from Sony.

For instance, the Sony Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T2 Ultra Dual will get a new status bar icon, as well as new and improved Quick Settings. These two features are now more intuitive, as well as more customizable thanks to the new update.

Moreover, Sony has also included some useful updates for its media applications, including Walkman, Album and Movie apps, all of which now boast integration with Sony's cloud service.

"The next Sony User Experience upgrade for Xperia T2 Ultra & Xperia T2 Ultra Dual starts right about now," Sony touts in a new blog post on Wednesday, July 16.

"We've been working to build new Sony experiences on Google's KitKat release to create some neat / sweet features (if we say so ourselves)."

Sony further goes on to detail some of the new functionality that will grace the two Xperia T2 Ultra models, as follow:

  • Android 4.4 KitKat as standard, complete with all its performance and user interface (UI) optimizations.
  • Sony's tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings - now more intuitive and customizable, with a cleaner look and feel.
  • The addition of the Sony PlayStation 4 user interface, with the sleek launch animation and live wallpaper across the lock and home screens.
  • Upgrades for Sony's entire native app portfolio, bringing all applications to the latest versions and adding tweaked/ enhanced functionality to Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, Smart Social Camera, and more.
  • Sony's Media apps such as Walkman, Album and Movies also get neat treats, with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration - "a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience." Sony Entertainment Network & PlayMemories integration brings a more intuitive user interface, as well as better download speeds and more.
  • Sony's unique custom interface experience - "Xperia Themes" - with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select.
  • Compatibility with Sony's SmartWear Experience; SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog app, allowing users to record social, physical and other activities.

In addition to the Xperia T2 Ultra, other Sony devices are in for the same treatment as well. Sony will roll out the Android 4.4 KitKat to several other handsets, including the Xperia E1, Xperia M2, and Xperia M2 Dual.
