Amazon has officially launched its new e-book and audiobook subscription service called Kindle Unlimited, which costs $9.99 per month and is cross-platform compatible.
After some early leaks, the new Kindle Unlimited has officially made its debut. For $9.99 per month, the service will allow users to read whatever they want, as long as it's in stock on Amazon. Initial content includes bestsellers such as the Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, as well as numerous other titles from William Goldman, Michael Lewis, Sara Gruen, Robert Penn Warren, Stephen Covey, Michael Chabon, Anthony Bourdain, Lois Lowry, and others.
"Kindle Unlimited gives you the freedom to explore. Try new genres, discover new authors, and dive into new adventures with unlimited access to our wide and varied selection of books," Amazon touts. "From rhetoric to romance, or comedy to tragedy, you will find unlimited stories waiting to be discovered. Relive the classics you grew up with, start on that best seller you've been wanting to read or try one of the hundreds of thousands of books you won't find everywhere. Find your next great read today."
Moreover, Amazon will also open the Kindle Unlimited service to its Kindle-exclusive books, as well as thousands of stories including Kindle Singles. Other Kindle features such as Whispersync, Popular Highlights, X-Ray, customer reviews, and Goodreads integration will also be available to unlimited users.
To kick off its new service, Amazon is offering a 30-day free trial so interested users can check out out the new Kindle Unlimited. If you decide to subscribe, you'll also receive a three-month Audible membership, as well as access to more than 150,000 professionally narrated titles.
The new Kindle Unlimited service will work with Kindle devices, Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad, Android tablets and smartphones, Windows Phone devices, BlackBerry, PC, Mac, and Windows 8. In other words, the service works anywhere that you can download the Kindle app.
Amazon's new Kindle Unlimited service will go head to head with existing e-book subscription services such as Scribd and Oyster, so it remains to be seen how it fares against rivals. To try out the new Kindle Unlimited, head over to Amazon's website at this link.
