Microsoft Surface Pro 3 at least $150 cheaper with back-to-school 2014 promotion

Microsoft is offering some attractive deals on its Surface tablets as part of a back-to-school promotion, shaving at least $150 off the normal prices.

Back-to-school deals from tech companies are already starting to pile up, with one offer more attractive than the other. Microsoft's back-to-school 2014 program has a few neat incentives as well, especially for students looking to purchase a new Surface tablet. As part of a limited-time special offer, college students can now save at least $150 if they buy a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet.

The temporary discounts of at least $150 for the Surface Pro 3 are available through Microsoft's own education store, and are valid until Sept. 3. In fact, interested customers can get up to $195 off, but this larger discount applies only to the most expensive Surface Pro 3 model in the lineup. That means the model with Intel Core i7 on board, which comes with 512GB of internal storage capacity and normally costs $1,949. This variant will cost $1,754 after the promotional discount, but most students (or their parents) will likely go for more affordable options.

The recently-released 64GB Surface Pro 3 with an Intel Core i3 processor on board is the base model, i.e. the most affordable one, costing $649 with the discount (this model normally costs $799.) The cheapest Surface Pro 3 model with an Intel Core i5 processor, meanwhile, comes with 128GB of storage and costs $849 after the discount.

It's worth pointing out that the Keyboard Cover accessory, which many consider essential to the Surface Pro 3 experience, does not come standard with the tablet. The accessory is available for purchase separately, for $117, but that minimum of $150 in savings would easily cover it as well.

These special education prices are available to both faculty and other staff, provided that they can provide eligible credentials.

The latest Surface Pro 3 is not the only tablet part of Microsoft's new back-to-school promotion, as the company is slashing 10% off any Surface tablet until Sept. 3. The Surface 2, for instance, now starts at $404.10 (down from $449).
