A "selfie phone" from Microsoft is apparently in the cards and may hit the market soon as the Nokia Lumia 720, running Lumia Debian Red firmware.
A Microsoft "selfie phone" has been rumored before, as the whole "selfie" trend is gaining momentum. The company reportedly has new Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the pipeline and one of them will allegedly boast a 5-megapixel front shooter, allowing for high-quality self-shots.
Some newly leaked images have now surfaced online courtesy of Windows Phone Central (WPCentral), showing what could be the upcoming Nokia Lumia 730 selfie smartphone.
According to the publication, the Nokia Lumia 730 selfie phone from Microsoft is currently under development under the codename "Superman," and is expected to arrive as the successor to the popular Nokia Lumia 720 smartphone.
The Nokia Lumia 730 is expected to sport a 4.7-inch display and a 5-megapixel front camera, but little else is known at this point regarding the rest of the device's specifications. The rear of the handset seems to be slightly bulged where the camera is located, which would indicate a large sensor that may boast Nokia's PureView technology.
The more intriguing part, however, seems to lie in the software side, as the leaked images show a new Lumia Debian Red firmware on board. Lumia updates are typically named after colors and come in alphabetical order, and this Debian Red update would follow the current Lumia Cyan.
"There is also evidently new firmware being developed for this phone that likely coincides with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 or even Update 2, which is thought to arrive in November. The name of this firmware is 'Debian Red,' which is the actual name of a color, though more often associated with the Linux Distro," WPCentral points out. "However, 'Debian Red' is very likely the internal codename, similar to how Lumia Black was originally called 'Bittersweet Shimmer' and Lumia Cyan was 'Cherry Blossom Pink.' The firmware names go in alphabetical order, starting with A for Amber, Black, Cyan and now D for Debian Red."
No other details are currently available regarding this purported Nokia Lumia 730 selfie phone codenamed 'Superman," or the intriguing Lumia Debian Red firmware. If the smartphone is ready to make an imminent debut, however, more information should come to light shortly.
