Waterproof HTC J Butterfly to expand its reach, launch as Butterfly 2 in APAC

The HTC J Butterfly that recently launched in Japan may be making its way to the Asia-Pacific market soon as the Butterfly 2, boasting impressive specs.

At the end of July, HTC launched its new J Butterfly smartphone with high-end specs and features on board, which made the handset seem like a waterproof HTC One M8.

According to a new leak, the smartphone could soon launch in the Asia-Pacific market as well, arriving as the HTC Butterfly 2. Tipster @upleaks has posted some photos of the device, revealing that it would retain the same design as the Japan version, and come in Rouge, Canvas, and Indigo color options. Several consecutive tweets aim to paint a picture of what to expect, and the image above reportedly shows the "English version" of the smartphone, with the mention that the HTC Butterfly 2 will not reach the EMEA or the U.S.

The tipster didn't offer any additional information regarding the handset's specifications, but it will likely come with the same hardware set as the Japanese HTC J Butterfly. That means a 5-inch full HD S-LCD3 display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage capacity, and microSD support for additional memory.

Other specs include a dual camera setup on its rear, but different than the one found on the flagship HTC One M8. More specifically, the HTC J Butterfly replaces the 4.1-megapixel UltraPixel sensor of the One M8 with a 13-megapixel camera paired with an additional 2-megapixel sensor. HTC's Duo Camera features such as UFocus and Duo Effects are still on board, and will likely grace the Asia-Pacific-bound Butterfly 2 as well.

The HTC J Butterfly further features a 5-megapixel front shooter, which will allow for high-quality video chats and self-shots. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, IRDA, and the smartphone also comes with IPX5/IPX7 certification for water and dust-resistance.

HTC made no official comment regarding when or if its new HTC J Butterfly smartphone will make its way to other markets, and @upleaks did not offer any availability date for this purported Butterfly 2 either. The HTC J Butterfly is set to hit retail availability in Japan by the end of the month, and the company may announce a wider release soon. Until it does, however, take everything with a grain of salt. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more details emerge regarding the HTC Butterfly 2, so stay tuned.
