Meet the mid-range Sony Xperia M2 Aqua – ‘The waterproof smartphone for everyone’ (VIDEO)

If you're looking for a mid-range smartphone that doesn't cost a fortune and is also waterproof, look no more - Sony has just announced its new Xperia M2 Aqua.

The latest Sony smartphone builds on the success of the Xperia M2 handset that made its debut earlier this year, but arrives as the first mid-range smartphone to boast the company's much-touted waterproof technology.

Marketed as "the waterproof smartphone for everyone," the Sony Xperia M2 comes with a premium OmniBalance glass design, decent specifications, and IP65/IP68 certification, which Sony boast is "the world's highest level of waterproofing available in a smartphone."

"Sony Mobile Communications ('Sony Mobile') today introduces Xperia M2 Aqua, the first smartphone to bring Sony's popular waterproof technology to a mid-range price-point. Featuring Sony's signature OmniBalance design and a fantastic 8MP camera, Xperia M2 Aqua not only brings waterproof technology to a new tier of smartphones, it improves on that technology, offering the highest waterproof rating (IP65/68) in a smartphone," the company announced in a new blog post on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

"Xperia M2 Aqua is a significant milestone in our product portfolio as we bring yet another of our signature technologies to a new category of smartphones," touted Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile. "The popularity of Xperia M2 showed us that there was a huge demand for premium Sony features at an affordable price-point. Following consumer feedback, we've now taken this a step further by bringing our waterproof expertise to a mid-range smartphone for the first time with Xperia M2 Aqua. It is a smartphone that lets customers take the best of Sony technology and entertainment with them wherever they go - come rain or shine - and we are excited to bring it to market."

In terms of specifications, the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua sports a 4.8-inch display with qHD resolution, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, Adreno 305 graphics, 1GB of RAM, and an 8-megapixel rear camera with Xperia-exclusive tech to maximize the experience. A 2,300 mAh battery will keep things up and running, while Android 4.4 KitKat will handle the software side. The smartphone is also 4G LTE-enabled, which is another plus for a mid-range handset.

The Xperia M2 Aqua will be available in black or white color options and will launch this fall in markets such as Latin America, Asia Pacific, and Europe. The company has yet to disclose pricing details for the handset, but the specifications suggest an affordable price tag. Check out the video below to see the Sony Xperia M2 Aqua in action.
