Microsoft Surface 2 gets $100 price cut for all models, including the LTE variant

Microsoft has slashed $100 off the price of any Surface 2 tablet, including the LTE model and all storage configurations.

With the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 powerhouse out and about, the last-generation Surface 2 is no longer the latest tablet in the company's portfolio. Nevertheless, the slate may still be attractive to some prospective buyers, especially after the new price cuts on the Microsoft Store.

With the latest discounts, the Surface 2 now costs $349 for the model with 32GB of internal storage capacity, $449 for the 64GB model, and $579 for the 64GB variant with 4G LTE on board.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the new price cuts will be enough to drive sales of the tablet. The Surface 2 never enjoyed much success to begin with, and sales of the tablet have been sluggish from the start. First of all, the Surface 2 is aimed at more budget-conscious shoppers, which means that it doesn't come with very high-end specs and features on board.

The reason behind the Surface 2's disappointing performance, however, likely lies in the software department. The Surface 2 runs Microsoft's Windows RT, which is a watered-down version of the fully-fledged OS. Many found it inconvenient and criticized Microsoft for not doing a good enough job at informing consumers about Windows RT, helping them navigate the OS and its limitations.

In terms of specifications, last year's Surface 2 sports a 10.6-inch 1080p display, packs an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor under the hood, and comes with 2GB of RAM on board. Other specs include a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 3.5-megapixel front shooter. According to Microsoft, the Surface 2 should last for up to 10 hours on a single charge.

In other words, the specifications are quite decent for this price point. If you don't have a problem with Windows RT and you don't necessarily have to have the latest and best tablet, you can now purchase the Surface 2 for $100 less. Microsoft makes no mention of whether this is a limited-time deal and, if so, when it will expire, but for now the Surface 2 is available under the new pricing scheme from the Microsoft Store and at authorized retailers.
