AT&T halts HTC One M8 Android 4.4.3 update over battery drain issues

AT&T has apparently halted the HTC One M8 Android 4.4.3 update shortly after releasing it, as some battery drain issues marred the experience.

The carrier had just recently started pushing out the Android 4.4.3 update to its variant of the HTC One M8, but users who received the firmware started complaining about severe battery drainage after the update.

Following a firestorm of complaints, AT&T has now stopped the update rollout in order to review the package and determine what was causing the reported battery issues. The carrier has reportedly confirmed to Android Central that it has indeed halted the update process, but offered no exact date for when it would resume the rollout.

Most HTC One M8 users expected the newer Android 4.4.4 KitKat to grace their handsets. Considering that 4.4.4 is a minor update, however, HTC decided to take the key security features and pack them into the Android 4.4.3 update for the One M8. Other than some Android fixes and tweaks, HTC also threw in better optimization for Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular connectivity. Other improvements with the new firmware include updates to the Camera and Gallery apps, Power History in the Settings menu, enhancements to the HTC Sync Manager, as well as some improvements to HTC BoomSound, Quick Settings, and Motion Launch.

The Android 4.4.3 update for the HTC One M8 has already reached the Sprint and T-Mobile versions of the handset, while the European model and the Verizon one are expected to receive it in the near future.

Unlike AT&T's update that apparently brought some battery drainage issues along with it, the Verizon update for the HTC One M8 is expected to deliver extreme power saving.

As previously mentioned, AT&T has yet to provide a specific date for when it will resume the update rollout for its HTC One M8. The carrier is working on fixing the issues and will push out the update again as soon as possible. On the downside, it remains unclear just how it will fix the issue for users who have already downloaded and installed the buggy Android 4.4.3 update before it was halted.
