Amazon launches new Kindle Fire HD tablets, complete with Kids Edition versions

Amazon has officially unveiled its 2014 lineup of tablets, consisting of refreshed Kindle HDX, as well as four new Kindle HD tablets.

More specifically, the company has launched two new Kindle Fire HD models, as well as Kids Edition versions of both of these slates.

Kindle Fire HD

The two new Kindle Fire HD tablets come with 6-inch and 7-inch displays and share the same specifications, meaning 720p HD displays, 1.5GHz quad-core processors, front- and rear-facing cameras, and Dolby Digital Plus Audio. Both models will come in black, white, cobalt, magenta, and citron color options, and will hit retail next month. The 6-inch Kindle Fire HD comes with a $99 price tag, while the 7-inch model goes up to $139.

"Fire HD is the most powerful tablet under $100," Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos touted in the press release. "The new Fire HD features a stunning HD display, quad-core processor, Dolby Digital Audio, front and rear-facing cameras, incredible readability, and Amazon's unmatched content ecosystem - all supported by Amazon customer service."

Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition

The Kids Edition, meanwhile, consists of two versions of the aforementioned Kindle Fire HD tablets, but these variants are specifically designed with children in mind. The Kids Edition models come with rubber cases to make them more durable, able to withstand the inevitable bumps and drops when handled by a child. Moreover, the slates also come with a two-year "worry-free" guarantee to replace a broken or damaged tablet, because accidents can happen. Lastly, Amazon is also offering a one-year subscription to Amazon FreeTime.

"Fire HD Kids Edition is a real tablet, not a toy," Peter Larsen, Vice President of Amazon Devices, explained in the press release. "Kids break things, so we added a 2-year, no-questions-asked, worry-free guarantee. Plus, you'll never be surprised by a bill - it comes with a year of FreeTime Unlimited, which includes over 5,000 books, movies, TV episodes, educational apps, and games at no additional cost."

Just like the regular Kindle HD models, the Kids Edition versions also come with quad-core processors, vivid HD displays, front- and rear-facing cameras, Dolby Digital audio, as well as access to Amazon's comprehensive content ecosystem that has more than 33 million movies, TV shows, books, songs, and Android apps and games.

The 6-inch Kindle Fire HD Kids Edition costs $149, while the 7-inch model comes with a $189 price tag. All four Kindle Fire HD tablets will start shipping in October.
