GoPro Hero4 cameras unveiled, take things to the next level

GoPro has officially unveiled its latest and greatest Hero4 lineup of cameras, boasting even more impressive specs and features than their predecessors.

The new models come in two editions - Black and Silver - and aim to offer a better experience on all levels. The star of the lineup is the new GoPro Hero4 Black, which is capable of shooting 4K video at 30FPS. According to the company, this model is "the most advanced GoPro ever."

The GoPro Hero4 Black can shoot 4K at 30FPS, 2.7K at 50FPS, 1440p at 80FPS, and 1080p, 960p, and 720p at 120FPS. For the sake of comparison, the previous Hero3 Black was capable of shooting 4K at 15FPS. On the other hand, the previous iteration could shoot 720p at 240FPS, something the new GoPro Hero4 Black can't do. When it comes to still images, meanwhile, the new GoPro Hero4 can capture 12-megapixel photos.

"With stunning image quality and powerful new features, HERO4 cameras take Emmy Award-winning GoPro performance to a whole new level," boasts the company. "Choose from HERO4 Black, with incredible high-resolution 4K30 and 2.7K50 video and high frame rate 1080p120 video, or HERO4 Silver, which pairs pro-quality video and photo capture with the convenience of a built-in touch display."

With the new Hero 4, GoPro has also enhanced the audio capture to double the dynamic range. In fact, the company claims the new Hero 4 doubles the performance with 2x more powerful processor and 2x faster video frame rate.

The new iteration will offer an ultra-wide angle glass lens with three different field of view settings - Ultra-Wide, Medium, and Narrow. The company has also added some new manual settings, which will allow users to tinker more with color, ISO, exposure, and others such.

GoPro cameras are also well-known for their resistance and durability, and the Hero4 is no different, boasting waterproof capabilities at up to 131 feet (40 m). The device also comes with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, enhanced connectivity, Smart Remote compatibility, and more.

Other highlights include exposure settings for nighttime shooting, a "HiLight Tag" for marking specific moments in a footage, auto low-light features, as well as a QuickCapture feature that powers up and starts recording with a single press.

The GoPro Hero4 Silver, meanwhile, comes with a built-in LCD touch display and plenty of neat features, but cannot shoot 4K video at 30FPS like its Black counterpart. It will still be able to shoot 4K video, but at a lower frame rate of 15FPS.

In terms of pricing and availability, the new GoPro cameras will hit retail on Oct. 5 with a €479.99 price tag for the Hero4 Black and €379.99 for the Hero4 Silver. It's also worth pointing out that the new Hero4 cameras are compatible with all previous GoPro accessories and mounts.
