Apple starts selling SIM-free iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus in the U.S.

Apple has officially started selling unlocked, SIM-free iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in the U.S. through its retail stores, as well as online.

Many prospective buyers prefer SIM-free devices if they don't want to be locked into a specific carrier. So far, Apple has offered its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets either with a two-year contract, or unlocked through T-Mobile in the U.S. This meant that unlocked iPhones came with a T-Mobile SIM-card, which users had to replace if they wanted to use the device on another network.

This marks the first time that Apple sells SIM-free iPhones, thus eliminating the hassle of purchasing an unlocked smartphone through T-Mobile and go through the extra activation steps to shift from the Uncarrier's network to some other carrier. In other words, this latest move now makes it easier than ever to get an unlocked, SIM-free iPhone and use it on your network of choice.

Without any announcement or fanfare, Apple has now started selling SIM-free versions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, both in its retail stores across the U.S. and online on Apple.com. The SIM-free iPhone 6 carries model number "A1586," while its larger iPhone 6 Plus counterpart is "A1524."

The SIM-free models of the two handsets are available at the same prices as the unlocked versions with T-Mobile. This means that the iPhone 6 in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB configurations costs $649, $749, and $849, respectively, while the iPhone 6 Plus in the same 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB options costs $749, $849, and $949, respectively.

Purchasing an unlocked, SIM-free iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus smartphone means that you can activate the device with any given carrier, whether it's in the U.S. or abroad. It's worth pointing out, however, that some of the mobile carriers abroad may not have support for 4G LTE, so it is advised to look into this matter before purchasing a SIM-free iPhone for use abroad.
