A new Android slate called the Remix Ultra Tablet was on display at CES 2015, bearing a strong resemblance to the Microsoft Surface Pro line.
The tablet comes from Jide, a company founded by three ex Google employees. The Ultra Remix Tablet comes with a magnetically connected keyboard and a kickstand that can extend to 40 and 80 degrees, and the whole look screams Microsoft Surface.
When it comes to build materials, the Remix Ultra Tablet uses a combination of metal and plastic, which lends it a premium look and feel. The slate sports stereo speakers along the edges, as well as a headphone jack, a microUSB port with an OTG adaptor included for turning it into a full-sized USB port, and a microSD card slot for additional memory.
In terms of specifications, the Ultra Remix Tablet comes with an 11.6-inch IPS display with 1080 resolution and packs an NVIDIA 4+1 processor under the hood, albeit it remains unclear at this point whether it's a Tegra 3 or 4 model. Other specs include 2GB of RAM, dual cameras with 5-megapixel sensors on both its front and back, and 16GB or 64GB of internal storage capacity, expandable up to 128GB via microSD.
The Ultra Remix Tablet further features a proprietary four-pin charger on the right side to juice up the battery, as well as a six-pin magnetic connector at the bottom for connecting the keyboard cover. The cover includes a full-size keyboard and a touchpad.
On the software side, the tablet is currently running a customized version of Android 4.4.2 called Remix OS, which aims to run like a PC but with Android app compatibility and Google Play certification. An update to Android 5.0, however, is reportedly in the works. Moreover, this Remix OS also comes with multi-window support, allowing users to run several apps at once.
According to Android Central, the Remix Ultra Tablet is set to go into production now and go on sale in the Chinese market soon, with the U.S. and UK set to follow in the second or third quarter of this year. Jide estimates that when its Ultra Remix Tablet reaches the U.S. market it will cost $349 for the 16GB model and $449 for the 64GB variant.
