Microsoft reportedly planning to unveil Windows 10 Mobile at Jan. 21 event

Microsoft is all set to unveil the Windows 10 consumer preview on Jan. 21 and a beta build for mobiles may debut at the event as well.

While so far Microsoft has offered Windows, Windows RT, and Windows Phone operating systems, the company said it plans to unify its platforms with the latest Windows 10.

Just recently, Microsoft released a Phone Insider app, which is now believed to herald the rollout of a beta version of Windows 10 for mobile devices. The app should allow registered Windows Insider users to get early access to pre-release OS updates. The Phone Insider app is available as a free download from the Windows Phone store, reportedly aiming to help Microsoft test the Windows 10 Mobile preview in order to make the necessary changes before rolling out the final OS version.

A new report from The Verge, citing sources close to the matter, now claims that Microsoft will offer more details on Windows 10 for mobiles at its Jan. 21 event.

"Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans tell The Verge that the company will demo a number of features aimed at Windows 10 on phones, including some user interface changes designed to more closely align its mobile operating system with its desktop counterpart and the Xbox One games console," the publication reports.

"Microsoft is also making changes to Windows 10 on the desktop to include light and dark themes that match the phone and tablet editions. Currently referred to as Windows Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile internally at Microsoft, the next mobile OS will be a combination of the Windows Phone and Windows RT operating systems. Microsoft is aiming to take advantage of its universal applications model to align its tablet and phone software to run the same apps across tablets and phones," the report further adds.

The company is expected to provide more details regarding its plans for developers and apps at its BUILD 2015 conference, but should focus on the consumer features of both the desktop and mobile Windows 10 at its Jan. 21 event.

With Microsoft's event just around the corner, however, we'll soon get the official scoop straight from the source.
