HTC One M8 Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA starts rolling out in Europe

The highly-anticipated Android 5.0 Lollipop update has officially started rolling out to the HTC One M8 in Europe, the company announced.

Back in the summer, when the new version of Android was still referred to as Android L, HTC promised to deliver the update within 90 days of the source code availability. Google unveiled Android 5.0 Lollipop back in October and not long after that it released the source code to companies. If HTC keeps its word to release the update within 90 days, it means Android Lollipop should roll out by Feb. 3.

HTC has already updated the developer and the unlocked versions of its One M8 to Android 5.0 Lollipop earlier this month, and the company is now expanding the update availability. Carrier versions of the smartphone were next in line, and the HTC One M8 is now receiving an over-the-air (OTA) update to the last major version of Android in Europe.

"HTC One (M8) owners in Europe, have a sweet tooth this morning? Check your software updates!" HTC senior global online communications executive Jeff Gordon (@urbanstrata) announced in a Twitter post on Wednesday, Jan. 28.

HTC ROM developer LlabTooFeR, who is also a trusted tipster, said the new software version is 4.16.401.10 and the update package weighs 780MB. The update will bring a number of new features and improvements to the platform, aiming to enhance the device's overall performance. Users will be able to enjoy lockscreen notifications, floating notifications, a redesign notification dropdown, a new recent activities interface, and more.

As always with OTA updates, however, take into account that the rollout is gradual and not all devices will receive the update at the same time. If you have yet to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop, rest assured that the update should become available momentarily.

HTC has yet to mention when the HTC One M8 in the U.S. or other parts of the world will get the same treat to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but it shouldn't take too long now.
