The new Microsoft Lumia 640 smartphone is now up for pre-order unlocked in the UK ahead of its retail debut in early April.
Just a few days ago, Microsoft took the wraps off its latest handsets at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, introducing the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL. Both handsets will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Denim out of the box, and will receive an upgrade to Windows 10 when the new OS version is ready to roll out later this year.
We previously heard that Microsoft will not be launching any high-end Lumia flagship until the second half of this year, and the newly-unveiled Lumia 640 is not a flagship by any means. The handset bets on affordability and comes with mid-range specifications on board, aiming to offer a good performance on a budget.
More specifically, the new Microsoft Lumia 640 sports a 5-inch display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor under the hood, clocked at 1.2GHz and paired with 1GB of RAM. The handset further features 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD support for additional memory of up to 128GB, and 30GB of free OneDrive cloud storage space.
Other specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1-megapixel front shooter, and a 2,500 mAh battery to keep things up and running. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 4G LTE.
Upon announcing its new Lumia 640, Microsoft said the handset will begin its global rollout in April and should cost roughly €139 for the 3G model and €159 for the 4G LTE-enabled variant.
In other words, the Lumia 640 is a mid-range handset that should deliver a good performance without burning a hole through your wallet, highlighting Microsoft's continued commitment to the affordable segment of the smartphone market.
The unlocked Microsoft Lumia 640 has now gone up for pre-order in the UK at retailer Unlocked Mobiles, sporting a price tag of £149.98 SIM-free. The retailer lists the estimated shipping time as the first week of April, with no exact date at this point.
