Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL UK pricing, launch dates revealed, Microsoft Store pre-orders now live

The affordable new Microsoft Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL are ready to hit the UK soon, and pricing and release dates are now available.

Microsoft officially took the wraps off its new Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL earlier this month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015, introducing the two handsets as affordable Windows Phone 8.1 mid-rangers.

The company offered no exact launch and pricing details at that point, although it did mention estimates for how much they should cost in euros. The Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 are set to arrive in various markets and regions across the world over the next few weeks, and Microsoft has now offered more information regarding the handsets' UK release.

Both the Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640 XL are now available for pre-order in the UK directly through the Microsoft Store, ahead of their commercial release next month. The Microsoft Lumia 640 sports a price tag of £169.99 including VAT and is set to launch on April 7, while the larger Lumia 640 XL costs £219 including VAT and will hit retail later in the month, on April 28. The prices are for the 4G LTE versions of the smartphones.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is available for pre-order here, and interested customers can choose between black or orange color options. The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL phablet is available for pre-order at this link, and comes in black, cyan, orange, or white color options.

Both of these handsets come with mid-range specifications on board, aiming to cater to the affordable segment of the smartphone market. On the software side, the handsets will ship with Windows Phone 8.1 and the Lumia Denim update on board out of the box, and are set to receive an upgrade to the latest Windows 10 as soon as the new OS is ready for release.

Microsoft is also expected to launch a high-end flagship this year, as Qualcomm has already confirmed that a Snapdragon 810-powered Lumia is in the cards, but it will likely not arrive until the second half of the year. The company will reportedly focus mostly on affordable devices for now, in an effort to attract more customers and boost its market share.
