Samsung expects record sales of its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones, surpassing even the top-selling Galaxy S4.
Talking to the press in Seoul on Thursday, April 9, Samsung Mobile CEO SK Shin said the company expects the latest-generation smartphones to be its best-selling devices yet.
"Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea's tech powerhouse, expects record-breaking sales of its new flagship Galaxy S6 smartphones, its mobile chief said Thursday, as the company strives for a rebound after posting its weakest earnings in three years last year," reports the Korea Herald.
So far, the Galaxy S4 has been the company's best-selling smartphone ever, but Samsung anticipates shipments of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to be even more impressive.
"We expect (the figure) will be a lot higher, compared with the Galaxy S5 last year or its preceding model," Shin further added.
At the same time, the executive reckoned that Samsung may have troubles keeping up with Galaxy S6 Edge demand. The smartphone's curved display is reportedly difficult to manufacture, and demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge has apparently been greater than Samsung expected. Consequently, initial availability of the device may be affected. The company promised to improve supply channels as soon as possible, but it could take until the end of the year to achieve wider availability for the Galaxy S6 Edge.
The new-generation Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are set to make their commercial debut globally on Friday, April 10, starting in South Korea, the U.S., the UK, and Germany.
The two handsets have stirred lots of interest since their debut not only due to their high-end specs and features, but also because they finally ditch the infamous plastic design of previous Galaxy smartphones. The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge sport metal frames and glass backs, giving them a more premium look and feel.
It remains to be seen whether the Galaxy S6 will indeed prove to be the company's most successful smartphone to date, but Samsung has great expectations in this regards. On the other hand, the company also expected the Galaxy S5 last year to be more popular than it actually was, and saw a notable decline in profits compared to the previous year.
