LG itself apparently confirmed that it has a Windows Phone smartphone in the pipeline, as a relevant reference popped up on the company's official website.
Not too long ago, back in December 2014, word came out that an unknown LG VW820 device was en route with Windows Phone on board. This of course fueled rumors and expectations regarding an upcoming LG smartphone running Microsoft's mobile platform rather than Android, and LG has now confirmed it.
As German site Winfuture points out (via GSM Arena), LG's own website has two separate listings (see image above) for the unannounced VW820 device, confirming that it will indeed run Windows Phone.
The Bluetooth SIG has also certified this LG VW820 device, listing it as an "LG mobile phone."
It remains unclear at this point, however, just what specifications the LG VW820 Windows Phone smartphone will pack under the hood, when it will make its official debut, or what price tag it will have. No information is available regarding global availability either, so we don't know at this point what markets this device will reach.
Previous information, meanwhile, revealed that the LG VW820 will come with a 4.7-inch touch display with a modest resolution of 480 x 854 pixels, which suggests that the handset will be a low-end offering. This, in turn, indicates that the rest of the specifications will be quite modest as well, so the LG VW820 should come with a budget price tag.
Lastly, considering that LG's website lists the VW820 as a Windows Phone device, the handset will likely come with Windows Phone 8.1 on board. The latest Windows 10 is expected to arrive this summer and ditch the "Phone" part from its name, as it aims to be a universal OS for various devices with different form factors and specifications, such as phones, tablets, and PCs.
With no specific announcement from LG, however, it's tough to tell at this point just what the upcoming VW820 will bring to the Windows Phone segment of the smartphone market. If previous rumors turn out to be accurate, the handset could launch on Verizon Wireless in the U.S. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information comes to light, so stay tuned.
