Verizon Wireless now rolling out Android 5.0.1 Lollipop for Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S4 owners on Verizon Wireless are in for a neat treat, as Big Red is finally rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop for the handset.

Launched back in October last year, Android 5.0 Lollipop is the last major version of Android and brings a number of changes and improvements, as well as a few new features designed to enhance the overall experience. The new OS version has been gradually making its way to more devices over the past few months, but older models are usually not the first in line to get updates.

Carrier versions of devices are sometimes even further down the line, especially if it's an older model. The Samsung Galaxy S4 was the company's flagship smartphone for 2013, and two other flagships have succeeded it. Nevertheless, Android 5.0 Lollipop has already started its journey to the older Galaxy S4, albeit the process is a bit sluggish. The update first landed in Russia and India, followed by some European countries, and eventually it reached the U.S. as well.

AT&T and T-Mobile were the first to update their respective versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 to Android 5.0 Lollipop, and now Verizon Wireless is finally joining the party. Verizon is notorious for dragging its feet when it comes to delivering updates, but it's better late than never.

Big Red has now announced that it has started pushing Android 5.0.1 to its version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, adding a number of neat features and improvements.

"Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce an operating system update to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This version brings Android beyond smartphones and tablets, allowing access to apps and Android services on other connected screens like TV's, cars and wearables. The new material design offers complex animations, 3-D views and improved runtime," Verizon touts in its announcement (PDF).

The new software version carries build number LRX22C.I545VRUGOC1 and will roll out in stages, which means that not all devices will receive it at the same time. It may take a few days for all Samsung Galaxy S4 devices on Verizon Wireless to get Android 5.0.1 Lollipop, but the update is nonetheless on its way and should arrive shortly.
