Microsoft Surface Pro 4 to officially debut in mid-May?

Microsoft may not unveil any new hardware at its current BUILD 2015 developer conference, but a Surface Pro 4 may nonetheless be just around the corner.

The high-end Surface Pro 3 tablet (pictured above) made its official debut on May 20 last year, and the company may be gearing up to unveil its successor this month. According to a new report, Microsoft will take the wraps off a top-notch Surface Pro 4 tablet soon.

More specifically, Slashgear reports having learned from an anonymous source that Microsoft will host a special event in mid-May to unveil its new-generation Surface Pro 4 slate.

"While we've not had extensive experience with our source before, we have great reason to believe this prediction will come true," Slashgear notes.

The highly-anticipated Surface Pro 4 starred in an extensive leak a few days ago, prompting many to believe that Microsoft might make it official at its BUILD 2015 developer conference, which kicked off on April 29 in San Francisco.

According to the previous leak, the Microsoft Surface Pro 4 will boast a large 12-inch display with a 2,160 x 1440 pixel resolution and pack a powerful fifth-generation (Broadwell) Intel Core i-series processor under the hood, which would deliver the processing power of a laptop. The tablet is also expected to come with a Type Cover 3, third-generation Docking Station, as well as a new-generation N-Trig Surface Pen. The company had previously suggested that it would take accessory compatibility into account when designing future models so customers wouldn't have to buy all-new accessories for each iteration.

The Surface Pro 4 is further rumored to feature the same vent holes found on previous Surface models, but sport a fanless design at the same time. Heat accumulating within the device would dissipate through those vent holes.

The new-generation Surface Pro 4 is further tipped to come with a thinner design compared to its predecessor, albeit it may not lighter. Otherwise, the slate is expected to retain several features from the Surface Pro 3, including a very similar, if not identical battery, as well as the same ports and kickstand. While the Surface 4 may end up with the same battery of the Surface Pro 3, it remains to be seen whether battery performance will be the same as well.

No specific date has been rumored for when the Surface Pro 4 could make its debut. If Microsoft does indeed plan an unveiling for this month, however, more information should come to light shortly. For the time being, take everything with a grain of salt until an official announcement.
