Samsung is not only a leading brand in electronics industry but the very initiator of the smart watch industry. The South Korean giant corporation was the first to introduce in September 2013 the smart watch called the Galaxy Gear. They launched a whole line of smart watches, following the initial success. Today, Samsung smart watches that are available on the market include Gear 2, Gear S, and Gear Neo.
Many tech fans were surprised that the South Korean corporation did not launch a new smart watch in 2015 at the Mobile World Congress. Tech analysts and fans alike were expecting the launch of the new smart watch at the event, besides the Samsung S6 and Samsung S6 Edge mobile phones. However, Samsung has not adopted the round face design yet, a new trend on the market explored by both Motorola and LG, its main competitors.
Young-hee Lee, Samsung's Mobile Marketing Executive Vice President, declared that Samsung has intended to break up the status quo by not introducing a smartwatch alongside the S6 series. Up to date, the Korean electronics corporation was associated with launching the wearable gadgets and mobile phone simultaneously.
Samsung seems to want to change this cycle now by developing a more unique product. They invest their resources and time in a unique idea and this is the reason why the company has halted, for the time being, such launch of any wearables.
The patent pending application submitted by Samsung last May coincides with Mr. Lee's statement. The patent covers the new design of a round smart watch with a crown-shaped power button and a rotating bezel ring. Other special features of the new gadget include barcode register, image recognition, and gesture controls. The new high-tech features will enhance the users' smart watch wearing experience, taking it to a whole new level.
The smart watch from Samsung with round face design will be called Orbis. This new gadget will not only serve the purpose of a hand accessory but will be in fact a multi-purpose gadget. The device could be used as an armband, necklace, or keychain. Giving all the high-tech features it would contain, Samsung Orbis will also be a luxurious item. The smart watch will include a digital camera as an additional incentive.
Other competitors are currently in the process of launching new smart watches, including Watch Urbane from Android, the Pebble smart watch from Pebble, and the Apple Watch. Time will tell how Samsung Orbis will position among its competitors in a very tough market. On Orbis' success will depend whether or not Samsung could maintain its current position as 'smart watch market leader'.
