Police Investigation Says Hacking Team Hack May Be An Inside Job

Milan, Italy- police investigation on the Hacking Team hack rules an inside job as a possible cause of the data breach, which happened almost a month ago.

The investigation is looking into the organization's own employees, as well as governments from different countries, as possible perpetrators of the hack. According to The Guardian, investigative sources who are working on the case are suspecting six former employees of the organization for being responsible for the leak.

The six employees are now under the investigation of police. They have come under the suspicion after David Vincenzetti, the spyware organization's chief executive, found that source codes for several tracking and hacking softwares have been among those dumped into public websites as a result of the hack.

The hack sent about 400 GB worth of confidential content from the organization's system to websites such as Pastebin and WikiLeaks. The data revealed transactions made by Hacking Team with oppressive regimes such as Sudan and Ethiopia. Email exchanges showing these transactions have made their way to Twittet and some malware-infected websites.

The leaked information also revealed governments and intelligence services as clients of the Italian spyware provider. Hacking Team has previously denied allegations of the organization selling offensive services and softwares to oppressive regimes.

It also claimed that the documents have been falsified. Early this month, a hacker called Finn Fisher claimed to be responsible for the hacking incident, stating it on a mock Twitter account.

The claim has not been followed up since then. Because of the incident, the organization is still on emergency mode.

Hacking Team provides spyware, tracking, and hacking services and softwares for governments. The massive leak has revealed that some of Hacking Team's dangerous softwares may be infected with malware as a result of the hack, and that the organization has allegedly sold wares to private businesses.
