The game console is a three-way battle among Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. It has reportedly been a close fight between Sony and Microsoft. But on July 30, Thursday, Sony has announced that sales of the PlayStation 4 has reached more than 25 million units. The company projects a 39-million unit sale come March next year, according to a report published in Metro UK.
Microsoft has not disclosed the sales of the Xbox One, its own gaming device. Market analysts put the number at about 13 million, just about half of the PlayStation 4's sales. From April through June, the PlayStation 4 has nabbed an additional 3 million units sold. Xbox One, for its part, however, has sold more units than the Sony console many times over. The Xbox One has sold well in the U.S. and sales have outnumbered that of the PlayStation 4 in the past two Christmases. It has not fared as well in Europe and Japan.
Sony expects to sell 16 million more units by the end of this year. The gaming console has been a success since it first launched about twenty years ago, in 1994. The bulk of the company's revenues is reportedly brought in by the PlayStation line. The Japanese brand's first version of the gaming hardware has sold over 100 million units, about ten years after its release.
Microsoft is reported to be working on streaming PC games to Xbox One and integrating the format to the just-released Windows 10. A Xbox App has already been developed for the operating system, allowing the direct integration of the Xbox 360 and Xbox One to the PC.
Nintendo Wii U is the consistent third-placer in the gaming device market. The company has just announced that it reached 10 million units in sales three years after its 2012 release. The sale marks a milestone for the company, which has gotten a considerable increase in revenues from the device.
