It looks like Samsung is ushering in the new month with product releases. The Korean tech company is slated to release new flagships in the IFA event which will be held in Berlin this coming Sept 4-9. Samsung has also provided its followers teasers of an upcoming smartwatch, which the company has just formally announced.
On Sept 1, Tuesday -- Samsung has officially announced its newest smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2. The new device is the second generation Samsung Gear S. Samsung promises a better design, longer battery life, larger memory and new features. With the first looks on the new smartwatch, Samsung appears to have delivered its promises.
The Indian Express has posted a gallery of photos of the new device. The Gear S2 looks rounder than its predecessor. The gadget has a 1.2-inch, 360×360 pixel AMOLED display, which leans closer to the size of regular wristwatches. The watch is also equipped with dust and water protection.
Tech website Wired notes that the Gear S2 has an e-SIM card embedded in it, and with a variation that has 3G connectivity, this may mean that the device will be able to let users call and text without using mobile phones. There is a variation without the 3G feature, but both versions are inclusive of Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and Wi-fi.
The version with 3G connectivity has a 300 mAh battery while the other one has 250 mAh. The watch is thicker than its predecessor, which implies a longer battery life. The 3G version is 13.5 mm thick while the non-3G is 11.5 mm thick. Both versions have 512MB RAM and 4 GB storage. Among the features, the smartwatch has been a heart rate monitor and accelerometer.
The price of the new smartwatch has not been disclosed yet. The exact release date has also not been announced as of this writing. The look of the new smartwatch has drawn comparisons to LG's. The company has just launched the deluxe edition of its Urbane Watch.
