Sony Releases The Xperia Z5 Range

Sony is making a serious stab at taking on Apple and Samsung's shares in the smartphone market. On Thursday, Sept 3, the Japanese tech company has launched three new handsets under the Sony Xperia Z5 range. The three versions vary in size. The Z5 compact is a 4.6-inch phone. The Z5 measures 5.2 inches, whereas the Z5 premium is the largest at 5.5 inches.

Business Technology has reported that the largest among the new handsets boasts a screen resolution that's twice as high as that of standard handsets today. The Z5 Premium is equipped with 807-ppi resolution, a whopping 3,840x2,160 pixel panel. It boasts a 23-megapixel camera. The 5.5-inch handset also features the first 4K screen display for mobile devices. The Z5 has a 1,080-pixel resolution, whereas the Z5 Compact has a regular 720p resolution.

The three versions are equipped with almost identical specs. They all come with 32GB storage and high-resolution audio chips. They are also powered by octa-core processors, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. The three handsets are also water resistant like their Xperia predecessors. They come with micro USB ports which need not be covered, also protected from the water like the rest of the device. The main difference lies in the display properties.

Another difference among the three new devices of the Xperia Z5 line is their battery capacity. Given that they vary in sizes, the battery also differs in the same way. The Z5 Compact comes with a 2,700 mAh battery. The Z5, on the other hand, has a 2,900 mAh battery. Lastly, the 5.5-inch Z5 Premium has a 3,490 mAh battery mounted on it. The RAM of the three devices also vary. The Z5 Compact has 2GB, while the Z5 Premium and Z5 both have 3GB, according to Engadget.

The new line of Sony handsets is powered by the Android 5.1.1 operating system. But users may want to stay tuned for a possible Android M upgrade for the phones. The handsets are now available for pre-orders in the United Kingdom. The Xperia Z5 Premium is priced at £699. The Xperia Z5 costs £599 while the Z5 compact comes for £549. European and U.S. pricing have not been announced as of yet.
