Software company IBM has created a business unit especially for the Internet of Things or IoT. The company has made the announcement in Armonk, New York, on that day. The company has come up with many innovations over the years, and the past few months has seen its computation technology, Watson, take the news as it began to learn Japanese to help in medicine research in the country.
IBM has been expressing its intention of investing in different areas of the IoT over the next few years. The IBM Newsroom stated that the company will be investing $3 billion in the next four years for its new business unit, and another one called the Educations market, which is set to launch formally later this year. Former Tom Cook Group and Premier Farnell Inc. CEO Harriet Green will be heading the new units.
IBM Senior Vice President John E. Kelly is confident of Green's impressive portfolio, saying she will lead the new units strongly. "Throughout her career, across multiple geographies and cultures, she has consistently shown a deep understanding of the needs of her customers and clients and how to help them achieve their goals and aspirations," Kelly added.
Harriet Green will be leading a team that will soon be composed of approximately 2,000 consultants in the two units she will be heading. The two units will be making use of the advantages of the company's Big Data technology, which specializes in analytics and cognitive computing. With its new unit, the company will be deploying new IoT solutions to leading partners, making their services smarter and more in tune with the needs of their clients.
Green said she is "honored" to be part of IBM. "The Internet of Things will help enterprises and governments at every level unlock entirely new areas of opportunity and growth, and no company is better positioned than IBM to be the partner of choice as these organizations embrace its potential." She also pointed out that education is being transformed by technology, and with IBM's position, the company will be able to help advance and improve it.
Last week, IBM has also announced a new head for its Watson Health unit. Deborah DiSanzo will be working as the unit's new general manager. DiSanzo used to work for Philips Healthcare.
