Virtual Reality is taking center stage this year -- Oculus pushing for a consumer release of its VR headset next year, Valve and HTC teaming up to create the Vive, Samsung setting it mainstream with the Gear VR, and Sony cooking up Project Morpheus to bring about a VR headset for the Playstation. The stage is all set.
Sony at Tokyo Games Show 2015 has just announced that their VR headset, previously named Project Morpheus is now rebranded as Playstation VR -- a name that makes much more sense because of Sony's gaming line carries the brand name.
"The name 'PlayStation VR' not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience," says Masayasu Ito, Playstation product business president.
Sony also confirms that the hardware itself and a number of games that use Playstation VR will be available for demonstration on the show floor. According to Sony's Playstation VR web page, the prototype features a 5.7-inch 1920 X RGB X 1080 OLED display that expands the field of view and enables low persistence to remove motion blur. It comes with 120hz refresh rate, resulting into smooth visual outputs. Latency is also greatly reduced to 18ms, making it about half of what the first prototype ever offered.
Sony, however, has not released an official statement about a specific release date, but previous reports suggest that it is pegged for a 2016 release and will cost 'several hundred dollars'.
