Microsoft Cortana may be taking a piece of the driver's seat soon. The software company's virtual assistant can be many things in Microsoft's many platforms. This time around, Microsoft may be experimenting with car models to bring in Cortana to automobiles in the future. On Tuesday, Sept. 15, the company has been reported to have developed a car prototype connected to Cortana.
According to a report from CNET, news of the newly-developed Cortana-connected vehicle prototype has been confirmed by an executive from the Microsoft Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group. The company has displayed Cortana on the windshield of the car -- allowing drivers to see locations in the area where they are driving. Cortana will also perform tasks such as making reservations for restaurants.
Samuel Shen, chief operating officer at Microsoft Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group confirmed the said report. Shen said about the Cortana car prototype, "We have not launched similar products due to the high cost, but we hope to have further discussions with Taiwanese partners to jointly explore future possibilities."
Also, Taipei Times reported that Microsoft has been eyeing car companies in Taiwan to produce the new car program. Shen has not named partners for Microsoft's new endeavour, nor did he indicate a timetable for the new project. Its annual TechDays software developing event in the country has pulled in more than 3,000 people, professionals and IT experts, from over 1,000 firms.
Microsoft has dabbled with automobile technology before, with car maker Fiat, Ford and BMW. With the continuous roll out of Windows 10, the software giant is expanding the use for Cortana. Microsoft has made the voice assistant a key feature of Windows 10 devices. The virtual concierge is also integrated in the Xbox One gaming console.
As for Microsoft, a spokesperson said, "We will always look at ways to bring high-value experiences, like Cortana, to consumers in a variety of ways. We have nothing to announce at this time."
