HP And SanDisk Collaborate To Make New Storage Class Memory

Leading storage manufacturer SanDisk has announced that it will partner with American global company Hewlett-Packard to jointly develop Storage Class Memory (SCM) products. HP's Memristor technology and expertise and SanDisk's non-volatile ReRAM technology will work together to create new enterprise-wide solutions for memory-driven computing solutions. Furthermore, the long-term partnership will also bring enhanced data centre solutions with solid state drives.

"We are very excited to deepen our relationship with HP and enhance its leadership offerings by using our complete portfolio of enterprise SAS, SATA and PCIe products, and leading-edge enterprise system solutions," SanDisk Memory Technology Executive Vice President Siva Sivaram said in a press release. "Our partnership to collaborate on new SCM technology solutions is expected to revolutionize computing in the years ahead."

Storage Class Memory technology is expected to be up to 1,000 times faster than flash storage and 1,000 times more endurance than flash storage. Furthermore, the new technology is also expected to deliver significant cost, power, density and persistence improvements over DRAM technologies.

The memory is expected to allow systems to employ tens of terabytes (TB) per server node and be utilized in applications including in-memory databases, data analytics in real time, as well as transactional and high performance computing.

Storage Class Memory technology will focus on addressing the massive streams of data that are generated by social networking, security, mobility, large scale data analytics, cloud services, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The collaboration of both companies will augment the current flash memory-based solid state drive product lines with SCM to provide high-performance storage solutions to enterprise data centres.

The new technology will also aim to contribute to HP's The Machine - the company's futuristic super computer that will radically alter large scale-scale data processing and will enable a quantum leap in performance and efficiency while at the same time lowering the costs and improving the security.
