Volkswagen will have its own electric car after officially announcing that the Phaeton will be its next flagship. The new car that was unveiled during the Frankfurt Motor Show last September may be the answer to the company's emission scandal.
After the scandals that Volkswagen was involved, the automaker has announced its concrete solutions by going electric. Rumours have been cleared by unveiling the Phaeton in the Frankfurt Motor Show that runs all-electric. The new car will be the carmakers' first electric car model which is on the limousine category, rather than sports cars or utility vehicles.
The electrified VW Phaeton will be the second generation model that was released in 2013 in Europe. The said car will be leading the carmaker's approach towards the future of electric cars.
Brand CEO Herbert Diess of Volkswagen states that the company is repositioning for the future. It plans to be more efficient in manufacturing electric cars. It also plans to incorporate fresh technology to its cars in the future.
The VW Phaeton will be joining a group of the car company's upcoming battery-powered automobiles based on a Modular Electric-Based Toolkit. The MEB toolkit is also being applied to Porsche's Mission E Concept along with Audi's e-tron Q6.
Diess also announced that the Phaeton can run 500 km with a single charge on its lithium-ion batteries with the use of its all-while drive system and its fast recharging capabilities.
The MEB toolkit is not designed to have internal combustion capabilities. Still, Volkswagen is focused on that idea and wants to let the whole world know that it still has its engineering skills to deliver change in car technology. The Phaeton will likely be assembled in Volkswagen's factory in Germany at Dresden.
The Modular Electric-Based system has been manufactured for all Volkswagen brands, and it has been planned to lodge all of the carmaker's frames.
As part of a big push in the electric car category, it is confirmed that Volkswagen is finalizing deals with Hitachi for making 800-volt superchargers that doubles charging time. If VW makes this concept a reality and applies it to their future models, this will be a market-changer for the electric car category.
