Facebook Now Lets You Filter Out Painful Memories With Its On This Day App

Facebook rolled out an update for its On This Day app that will allow users to filter out memories they don't want to see on Tuesday, Oc. 13. The update will allow users to remove memories from specific people and places.

Social media is a powerful tool for remembering milestones in life. Apps are especially made to remind people what their posts were on a certain day a couple of years back, and they bring a wave of nostalgia to their users. While many memories such as birthdays, marriage anniversaries and graduation days, among others, are happy ones which are worth remembering, some memories are better off forgotten. Who would like to be reminded of an anniversary with an ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend?

The update can be found in the app's Preference section that will let users to remove certain memories they do not want to remember, according to a report made by USA Today, To filter the memories out, users just need to type in the name of the person or a specific date.

"Everyone has various kinds of memories that can be surfaced - good, bad and everything in between. So for the millions of people who use On This Day, we've added these filters to give them more control over the memories they see," Facebook said in a statement. On This Day has been introduced to Facebook users in March this year. The app has not rolled out to all Facebook users.

On This Day features a timeline-style account of what happened to the user, at least according to Facebook, on a particular date. The app then allows the users to see memories from one year ago or longer. The app shows status messages, photos, links and posts from the user's Facebook history on a certain date. At a time when social media is virtually a diary of sorts for people, it does not come as a surprise that anything and everything may come up in the app.

Facebook has been making adjustments to accommodate its users' emotional states over the recent months. The latest adjustment is the coming of its Reactions feature, which lets users express more responses apart from just liking posts. Earlier, the social networking site has also made adjustments on how accounts of deceased members can be better managed by their appointed 'Legacy Contact'.
