Facebook Will Now Notify Users Who Are Being Spied On

Facebook has joined in taking action to secure user privacy as threats of it are all over cyberspace, Big names in tech have been taking measures to ensure that users of their platforms are not being threatened by security risks.

Over the last months, the social networking site has introduced tools in the platform to better accommodate privacy concerns. This time, the company announced that it will be issuing messages to users whom it suspects to be spied on by intelligence agencies of governments. The announcement has been made on Oct. 17, Saturday.

Facebook has stated on its blog that it will begin notifying users if the company thinks that their accounts are being spied on by entities which have affiliations with the state. "Starting today, we will notify you if we believe your account has been targeted or compromised by an attacker suspected of working on behalf of a nation-state," Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos said. An image of the notification may be seen on the left side of the page.

How Facebook will be able to know if a user is under security threat is not disclosed in the post. Stamos explained that this was done to "protect the integrity of our methods". Stamos also made it clear that the new notification system does not have anything to do with any compromise in the Facebook platform. "...having an account compromised in this manner may indicate that your computer or mobile device has been infected with malware," Stamos added that people who are affected should take care so that incidents won't happen to their systems again.

Facebook also said that the notifications will only be issued when the company has enough evidence to support its conclusion. Stamos ended the post by saying that Facebook will continue to work on improving the security settings of the social networking site.
