Olive Horrell is a 97-year-old woman who once lived as a child in the rural areas of Montana. Google alongside with Wish of a Lifetime Foundation makes her wish come true by having a glimpse of the future.
As a child, Olive Horrell grew up on a rural farm. They had no electricity, no radio and rode a horse as means of transportation. She and her family moved to California when she was only eight years old. While there, her family struggled to survive day after day. The very first computers she saw used punch cards to operate. At 97, indeed she has witnessed a whole lot of technology unveiling right before her eyes.
The Wish of a Lifetime Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goals are to grant the wishes of old folks. Together with Google, the foundation and the tech giant helped the old lady to make her wish come true to have a glimpse of the future.
The old lady had an in-depth tour around the Google Campus in Mountain View. There, she rode a car with auto navigation. She even tried Google Cardboard and a VR headset. Also, she had the chance to have a chat with the creative minds along the campus. One of them was Sergey Brin, a co-founder of Google and one of the foundation's biggest individual supporter and donor.
The old lady was no stranger when it comes to adventures. When she was still young, she went on kayaking expeditions all over the world. She even had the chance to climb famous mountains in Nepal. But her stopover at the Google Campus simply blew her away.
In addition to her visit at the campus, she had the chance to try out Google Translate and even the Liftwear program, which is still in its developmental stages, which will help people experiencing bodily tremors in their limbs in the future. Also, she had the chance to experience face detection for Google Photos.
A wish to see the future may have been enough, but it was made even more special when she had the chance to meet Jeremy Bloom, who happens to be the founder of the Wish of a Lifetime Foundation.
A part of the foundation's history, Bloom is a former Olympic skier and professional football player. He founded the foundation with inspirations coming from his experience with his own grandparents' dreams. Also, he runs a small company based in Arizona, works as hard as other people in its startup business, but still makes time to grant old people their wishes one at a time.
The old lady wholeheartedly thanked Bloom for granting her wish. Most of the time, people like her have been unseen and forgotten by the society as the days go by. She said that her trip to the campus was three years' worth the wait and that what she saw and experienced on the trip were never in her imagination conceivable until today.
