Dropbox has announced today that it will be dropping two of its apps - Mailbox, which it acquired two years ago, and Carousel, an app designed to deliver a new way of experiencing and sharing photos. Dropbox first aspired to extend the simplicity of its cloud storage service to other parts of its users, but it had ultimately reached the decision to shut down both of its apps.
Dropbox through its official blog today said that the reason for them shutting down both Carousel and Mailbox is because it had increased their "team's focus on collaboration and simplifying the way people work together."
"To our Carousel and Mailbox users, thank you for embracing these products-and we're sorry. It's not easy to say goodbye to products we all love," Dropbox said.
The team that has been handling Mailbox also released a separate blog post where the app's developers wrote that "there is only so much an email app can do to fundamentally fix email." Furthermore, they also noted that a number of the new advancements found in email management Mailbox made were now also available in other apps as well.
The Mailbox team through a FAQ page also confirmed the date of the shut down will take place on Feb. 26, 2016. However, users will be provided with an option to export their auto-swipe patterns to assist in recreating them. For snoozed emails, it will be available in the "later" list.
When the date of shut down takes place all of its users' drafts, auto-swipe settings and snoozed emails will then be deleted. Furthermore, messages that fall into these respective categories should remain on the user's Gmail and iCloud accounts without any issues as well. Users who have earned 1 GB of free Dropbox storage space by signing up with Mailbox will not lose the extra storage space they have acquired.
